Migraines are severe headaches that can include sensory symptoms such as blind spots, tingling in the legs and arms, flashes of light, sensitivity to sound and light, nausea, and vomiting. The pain can last for hours, even days. Typically, migraines and headaches are triggered. Triggers include:
Treatments for chronic migraine pain or headaches vary depending on the condition causing the pain and its location. Dr. Rehman usually takes a conservative approach, prescribing pain management and therapy. However, in some situations, a more interventional treatment may be needed. An occipital nerve block might be used to treat tension headaches. A trigeminal nerve block might be administered or an epidural blood patch. Botox® treatments have also been FDA- approved for treatment of chronic migraine pain.
Botox treatment is given at 12-week intervals over a 15-month period to manage chronic migraine pain. The injections are given in a specific order, in specific locations on the face and head. The treatment should dull the pain over time. Patients should commit to a series of treatment for the best chances of success.
People who suffer from migraines should keep a journal of their migraines and triggers. If you suffer from chronic headaches you should meet with Dr. Rehman to discuss your symptoms, and identify any patterns or triggers. Take your headache log with you to share the information with him. Once you know what triggers the migraines, you can take steps to avoid them. Dr. Rehman also wants to review the medications you take regularly, including vitamins and supplements, as medications can sometimes cause headaches as side effects.
Reducing stress is another way to try to reduce migraines, as many patients suffer from stress- related headaches. Visit your dentist to check on the health of your jaw, which is another physical cause of chronic headaches. Treatment for TMJ, or receiving a mouth guard to reduce the effects of nighttime teeth grinding, can also help to reduce headaches.
